This century has been a great one, at least for my tastes. We're not living in the same culture we were living in in the late 20th century. Meanwhile, if I look at a lot of the lists right above this post, I'll see mostly albums I've never heard. None of them are obscure or uncelebrated, hell, two of 'em won Pulitzer Prizes. Probably people have mentioned a bunch of my other favorites of the period, I dunno I haven't been through the thread - Folklore, Lemonade, Black Messiah, Red, Love and Theft, Wayne Shorter's Without a Net- but maybe not a lot of others: Henry Threadgill's In for a Penny, In for a Pound, Roomful of Teeth's debut recording of Caroline Shaw's Partita for 8 Voices Wadada Leo Smith's America's National Parks Sylvie Courvoisier's D'Agala, A Far Cry's recording of Andrew Norman's The Companion Guide to Rome the Jack Quartet's recording of John Luther Adams' The Wind in High Places the Arditti Quartet's complete Lachenmann String Quartets recording (though the composition dates to the 21st century in online one of the three quartets recorded). Matana Roberts' Coin Coin series of works - the first five of an anticipated 12 are out so far - have been the knock-out exemplary works of the era for me so far. Personally, I'm not sure much of the recorded music I've found most interesting in the 21st century so far has made anyone else's lists yet: So we have more opinions about more stuff than we had then. Plus we have neither the kinds of gatekeepers of opinion at the height of the mass media/electronic hearth era, nor the kind of respect culturally we had for gatekeepers of opinion, Media and communications is now instantaneously global. There are also many, many more people in the world - in 1960 there were 3 billion people in the world, today there are more than 8 billion, a 2.7X increase in population. Well, I wouldn't be surprised to discover that there have been more new recordings released in the first 23 years of the 21st century than in the whole of the 20th century. Broken Social Scene - You Forgot it in Peopleġ6. ![]() ![]() The Revolutionary Army of the Infant Jesus - Beauty Will Save the Worldġ1. Generally the albums I have tended to play most often, not really any objective criteria used to pick them, only one album per artist or it would be a much narrower list, rankings kind of arbitrary though any of the Broadcast albums would be on top, so many great albums left off, lists covering this much time are kind of silly, but it's just for funģ.
